Art Feeds 50th Mural Reveal

Surrounded by bright, smiley-faced balloons and beaming teachers, Art Feeds 50th Mural sits behind a black curtain as students enter the room. The room not only fills with children, but also an overarching mood of excitement and joy. All 660 Sonora Elementary students in Springdale, AR have a piece of artwork incorporated into this collaborative mural that has been in process for several weeks. In just a few moments, the 12’ tall by 8’ wide mural will be revealed! You can watch the whole thing here.

This particular mural has a bonus reason to be celebrated as its Art Feeds 50th mural. In 10 years, Art Feeds has created 50 murals with over 18,000 little artists. An exciting milestone!

At Sonora Elementary this semester, the theme of this mural was chosen by students as Dreams and Perseverance with the color palette Peppy Pastels. Every single student dreams up a drawing to tell the story of the theme they chose together. Then they illustrate their best artwork for the world to see. In the mural design process, the Art Feeds team of designers turns hundreds of drawings into one collaborative mural. Four graphic designers carefully traced each drawing into one digital design that is the student’s masterpiece mural!

This project gives children the opportunity to internalize collaboration, problem solving skills, expression, risk taking, confidence building, and student empowerment. To commemorate the process and final work of art, each student also creates a Paint Brush Buddy to take home.

As the black curtain was shifted to the side by Art Instructors Lena Nguyen and Jordan Anson, students broke into a wild applause as they saw the final work. Gasps and “I see mine!” resonated throughout the room. They shouted hip hoorays with Meg Bourne, Founder + CE0 of Art Feeds, and gave themselves pats on the shoulder as they were dismissed by Principal Regina Stewman.

Each mural created provides a sense of ownership and the methods used during the process equip students for further success in life and education. Art Feeds is proud to have partnered and celebrated its 50th Mural with Sonora Elementary School made possible by the Walmart Foundation!
